From Volcano to Cup: Discovering Guatemala’s Antigua Coffee Region
Share
Crafted With Purpose. Curated With Care.
Great coffee carries the imprint of its environment. From soil composition to climate and elevation, every element leaves a mark on the final cup. This week, we turn our focus to one of Guatemala’s most storied regions, where volcanic land and centuries of cultivation converge.
Welcome back to our Weekly Coffee Education Series, where origin takes center stage.
🌍 Bean Origins: This Week’s Featured Growing Region
Antigua Guatemala
Located in the central highlands of Guatemala, Antigua is framed by three prominent volcanoes: Agua, Fuego, and Acatenango. This dramatic landscape is more than visually striking. It plays a defining role in the region’s coffee character.
Antigua coffees are grown at elevations ranging from 5,000 to 6,500 feet. The area’s volcanic soil is rich in minerals, while cool nights and consistent rainfall support slow, even cherry development. The result is a coffee that is balanced, structured, and deeply comforting.
Antigua is often considered a benchmark region for Guatemalan coffee, prized for its reliability and classic profile.
🌱 Farm & Processing Insight
Volcanic Soil and Washed Precision
Most coffees from Antigua are processed using the washed method, allowing the region’s volcanic influence to take center stage. After harvesting, cherries are depulped, fermented, washed, and sun-dried with meticulous attention to timing and cleanliness.
Volcanic ash replenishes the soil naturally, enriching it with nutrients that contribute to the coffee’s depth and subtle spice notes. Farmers in Antigua often work small plots that have been cultivated for generations, blending tradition with modern quality standards.
☕ Flavor Profile & Tasting Notes
Classic, Balanced, and Comforting
Antigua coffees are known for harmony rather than sharp contrast. In the cup, you can expect:
- Milk chocolate and cocoa notes
- Gentle spice such as cinnamon or nutmeg
- Caramelized sweetness
- Medium body with a smooth, rounded finish
This is a coffee that feels familiar yet refined, making it an excellent daily drinker for a wide range of palates.
🔥 Roast Approach
Emphasizing Warmth and Structure
For Antigua, we lean toward a medium roast profile. This level of development enhances chocolate and caramel notes while maintaining balance and body.
Our approach avoids over-roasting, allowing the volcanic character to express itself through warmth and subtle complexity rather than bitterness or smoke.
🫖 Brew Method of the Week
French Press for Body and Depth
A French press is an excellent choice for Antigua coffee, highlighting its body and rich mouthfeel.
Suggested parameters:
- Coffee to water ratio: 1:15
- Water temperature: 200–205°F
- Coarse grind
- Brew time: 4 minutes
This method brings forward chocolate, spice, and sweetness while delivering a satisfying, full-bodied cup.
🍽️ Pairing of the Week
Rich Flavors That Complement
Recommended pairing:
A chocolate croissant, cinnamon roll, or lightly sweetened baked good.
These pairings echo the coffee’s cocoa and spice notes without overpowering its natural balance.
