Volcanic Elegance: Exploring Indonesia's Flores Coffee Region

Volcanic Elegance: Exploring Indonesia's Flores Coffee Region

Crafted With Purpose. Curated With Care.

Some coffee origins surprise you with vibrant acidity. Others impress with bold fruit or floral aromatics. This week, we journey to one of Indonesia's hidden gems - Flores Island - where volcanic landscapes, traditional farming, and generations of craftsmanship produce coffees celebrated for their syrupy body, baker's chocolate richness, and remarkable balance.

Welcome to this week's Weekly Coffee Education Series, where every origin tells a story worth discovering.

🌍 Bean Origins: This Week's Featured Growing Region

Flores, Indonesia

Located east of Bali within the Indonesian archipelago, Flores is home to some of the country's highest coffee-growing elevations. Many farms are situated between 4,000 and 5,500 feet above sea level, particularly around the volcanic slopes near Bajawa.

The island's fertile volcanic soil, cool mountain climate, and abundant rainfall provide ideal conditions for cultivating high-quality Arabica coffee. Unlike some of Indonesia's larger coffee-producing regions, Flores remains largely small-scale, with family farms preserving traditional cultivation methods that have been passed down for generations.

The result is a coffee that reflects both its volcanic landscape and its rich cultural heritage.

🌱 Farm & Processing Insight

Tradition Meets Careful Innovation

While Indonesia is often associated with wet-hulled processing, many specialty producers in Flores have increasingly adopted washed and carefully managed natural processing methods.

Producers selectively hand-pick ripe cherries before carefully processing and drying them under the tropical mountain sun. These evolving techniques have helped improve cup clarity while preserving the rich body that Indonesian coffees are known for.

This combination of tradition and continuous improvement has elevated Flores to one of Southeast Asia's most respected specialty coffee origins.

☕ Flavor Profile & Tasting Notes

Syrupy Sweetness with Volcanic Depth

Flores coffees deliver remarkable depth while maintaining excellent balance.

In the cup, you can expect:

  • Baker's chocolate
  • Brown sugar sweetness
  • Ripe tropical fruit
  • Baking spice
  • Syrupy body
  • Mild citrus brightness
  • Long, smooth finish

The overall experience is rich without becoming heavy, making Flores an excellent introduction to Indonesian specialty coffee.

🔥 Roast Approach

Highlighting Body and Sweetness

For Flores coffees, we recommend a medium roast profile.

This roast level enhances chocolate richness while allowing the coffee's subtle fruit notes and natural sweetness to remain present.

The objective is to showcase the coffee's syrupy body without introducing excessive roast bitterness.

With volcanic soil, high elevations, improving processing methods, and passionate smallholder farmers, Flores has become one of Southeast Asia's most exciting specialty coffee regions.

It reminds us that some of the world's finest coffees come from places that are still waiting to be fully discovered.
